The Hennessey Venom GT has set a new world speed record for a two-seat sports car, hitting an official top speed of 270.49mph. Carried out on the 3.2-mile Space Shuttle landing strip at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, the Venom GT eclipsed the former fastest car in the world’s record, the 267.86mph Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. As Smart lifts the lid on the new ForTwo and ForFour this week, CAR magazine looks back on wonderful, wacky and downright woeful Smart special editions and concepts that have been created since the diminutive City Coupe first arrived on the scene in 1998. The Crossblade was a 2002 special edition based on the cabrio version of the city car. Its Brabus-tuned motor put out 70bhp and the car weighed just 740kg.

Volkswagen has announced a new Golf Match special edition, refreshing the popular hatchback by offering a better specification for no extra cost. Historically, the Golf Match has proved one of the best-selling Golf trims in the UK. Even though the Germans aren’t renowned for the generosity of their specifications, VW has thrown extra kit at the new 2014 Golf Match.
